Grey Sail Brewing settles Full Sail trademark dispute by tweaking business name

“I wish we had thought of it sooner,” said Jennifer Brinton. She and her husband, Alan, own what is now called Grey Sail Brewing of Rhode Island. They started out as Grey Sail Brewing but changed the name to settle a trademark dispute with the owners of Full Sail Brewing Co. of Hood River, Ore. Grey Sail also agreed to change how it displays its name on some of its packaging, Brinton said.

  1. These naming disputes are getting a little silly. I can see the whole Strange Brew / Brewing argument, but Full Sail shouldn’t be able to own the word “sail” no more than Starr Hill should be able to own the word “star”.

I understand the market is getting crowded, but I can’t see anyone mistaking Grey Sail’s packaging for Full Sail’s.
