Shmaltz to rebuild “World’s Smallest Brewery” after Hurricane Sandy destruction

shmaltz brewing logo(Brooklyn, NY) – Some Hurricane Sandy news from the Shmaltz Brewing newsletter…

The outpouring of care, concern and questions we’ve received following Hurricane Sandy has been tremendous. We are so fortunate to work in an industry defined by camaraderie –- this storm has reminded us that the craft beer community at large is remarkably generous. Although our one-gallon mini-brewery and our storefront in Coney Island fell victim to Sandy’s surge, our main brewing partners located upstate in Saratoga Springs came through unscathed. Thankfully, our production remains “business as usual.”

The mini-brewery in Coney Island was transformed from “The World’s Smallest Brewery” into the “World’s Messiest” – and now: “Emptiest.” Although nothing was salvageable, it only took a few Shmaltz men dressed in HAZMAT suits to clear it out over the course of a long day. Compared to what other people lost, including some of our New York City Brewer’s Guild friends, we’re unbelievably lucky.

By next summer, the mini-brewery will be re-built and restocked in time for another Coney Island freaktastic summer-by-the-seashore. Until then, we rally to help other brewers whose production has been interrupted by this tragedy –– as well as the entire community of Coney Island and beyond who will be in need for many months to come. Please follow us on Facebook and Twitter to stay informed about fundraisers and ways to help the community.
