(Winston-Salem, NC) – It’s a collaboration. Celebrating collaboration.
Foothills Brewing, working in conjunction with the city government of its hometown, Winston-Salem, has brewed a special limited release beer to celebrate the centennial of the two cities becoming one.
The city of Salem was founded in 1753, while Winston came along in 1849. The two cities voted to merge effective May 9, 1913.
Numerous celebrations and events have been planned for the first weekend in May in Winston-Salem – among them an official toast with Hundred Foot, brewed especially for this momentous occasion.
“We’re thrilled that the city wanted us to be a part of their celebration,” said Jamie Bartholomaus, president and brewmaster of Foothills. “This community has embraced us ever since we opened our doors, so to be recognized as an integral part of this city and this historic event is something we’re extremely proud of.”
Added Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines, “The celebration of the city’s Centennial is a very special time for our community. It’s made even more special by Foothills providing this unique and limited offering beer. Old Salem had a brewery, so it seems appropriate that we should celebrate our 100th birthday with a locally-brewed craft beer.”
As for the beer, Hundred Foot Centennial Ale is an ode to both the brewery and the community it serves. The name was chosen to reflect the spirit of collaboration that originally brought the two cities together. “Centennial Ale would have been the obvious choice, but there’s already a couple of those,” said Bartholomaus. “We went with ‘Hundred Foot’ since it represents the collaborative nature of North Carolinians in general, and Winston-Salem in particular.”
The beer itself is a cream ale dry-hopped with, naturally, Centennial hops. Reminiscent of Foothills’ Carolina Blonde, the beer pours a rich golden color, with the trademark smoothness and taste of a cream ale.
Hundred Foot will be available at most of the city’s centennial events; at Foothills’ downtown Winston-Salem pub; and in limited release 22 oz. bottles at selected retail establishments.
