Strange Brewing files motion against Strange Brew homebrew shop’s registered mark

strange brewing logoCafe Society’s Jonathan Shikes reported last week that after a lengthy legal dispute going the other way, Strange Brewing Company of Colorado is now taking action against Strange Brew Homebrew Shop of Massachusetts.

After a long dispute with a similarly-named homebrew store in Massachusetts, Denver’s Strange Brewing Company has gone on the offensive, asking the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to cancel the store’s right to the name "Strange Brew."

Strange Brewing’s Tim Myers appeared on the Colorado Craft Beer Show to talk about it on Saturday and said that Strange Brew had failed to come to the table with a reasonable compromise after a period of several months. He also clarified that most of the funds raised for its legal defense against Strange Brew would instead go to a charity.

Additionally, Myers noted that he recently talked to a startup brewery, Strangeways Brewing in Virginia whose owner visited Strange last fall. Myers suggested that they do an east coast-west coast collaboration in the future.

TTAB filings from February show that Strange Brew of Massachusetts filed an extension request on Strangeways’ trademark application so that it could have more time to consider opposing it.
