
Bars cite pitfalls of using sixth-barrel kegs instead of half-barrel kegs
“I’m not a fan of sixth barrels, especially since I worked for a distributor and know what the margins are,” said Adam Kass, director of food and beverage at The Greene Turtle, a 37-unit sports bar and grill chain in Edgewater, Md. Beer sales outnumber liquor two-to-one at the chain, which hosts a Mug Club at every unit. “Sometimes those cost us 50 percent more than a half barrel, so we choose them carefully.”

Depending on cost of the beer, bars lose $40-$60+ in profit by using logs. However, not all bars can accommodate 1/2s so a lot of small breweries choose to go 1/6 logs because they can get in more places.
