Lavery Brewing changing Stingy Jack name after receiving cease-and-desist letter

Lavery Stingy Jack Pumpkin Ale(Erie, PA) – Another day, another trademark tussle.

As part of a 42-minute long discussion about all things Lavery Brewing over on the Aleheads podcast, founder, Jason Lavery, revealed that the company is changing the name of one of its beers, Stingy Jack Pumpkin Ale.

The change arises after Lavery received a cease-and-desist letter from a Massachusetts winery that produces a product with the same name. Trademark filings show the name is registered to Les Trois Emme Vineyard and Winery LLC.

Laurelwood Stingy Pumpkin AleThough Lavery consulted their lawyers and trademark specialists who told the company it would likely win against the winery, Lavery decided against fighting it in court.

The new name will be Lavery The Devil’s Pumpkin Ale and it will be released around Labor Day.

According to RateBeer, five breweries have used the ‘Stingy Jack’ name with Laurelwood being the only other to have bottled it so far.
