Update from Communications Manager, Ryan Arnold:
Flipside will reach the whole market and will be 6 pack, 12 pack and draft. It’s a brand new brew, although we did use a name we love that’s floated around here before. We envision Tumbler peeling off a bit earlier this year and passing the baton to Flipside for September–October before Celebration emerges again.
DevESTATEtion is fluid with our hop harvest—how soon our crops mature and their yield. The current ballpark we have in mind is late September.
(Chico, CA) – Label approval came in for three new Sierra Nevada Brewing beers this past week, two of which are set to appear in bottles.
Sierra Nevada Flipside Red IPA
Sierra Nevada Flipside Red IPA looks to be a different beer from the Flipside Double IPA that came out previously only on draft.
Flipside Red IPA is a rebuttal to the mild-mannered beers of summer. Flipside Red IPA features robust tropical fruit and citrus hop flavors from the use of whole-cone Citra, Simcoe and Centennial hops. The perfect notes for this in-between season.
We have also seen copy that reads:
Just when it feels like the dog days will never end, suddenly, the switch gets flipped, and the air gets cooler and it’s clear that autumn is on the way.
Based on that, this sure appears to be a true-to-calendar fall seasonal. The brewery released Sierra Nevada Tumbler Brown Ale earlier this month so it wouldn’t be surprising to see this roll out closer to September. Celebration Ale comes out in October of each year.
Sierra Nevada DevESTATEion Black IPA
Sierra Nevada releases an estate-grown wet hop ale each fall but, judging by the label copy, it sounds like this may be replacing the traditional version.
Farming’s never easy but Mother Nature got the best of us this year and we lost our entire estate barley harvest to strong winds and California drought. Luckily, our homegrown hops are as good as ever, so we’re honoring the memory of the barley that wasn’t by bringing you this new Black IPA.
It’s a shame when good barley goes bad, but instead of crying in our beer – or lack thereof – we decided to do one better and make something new. Featuring organic malts and our estate-grown wet hops, this black IPA is the evil twin of our legendary Estate Ale. Black in color with a mild roasty flavor and moderate body, this beer has a bold citrusy and earthy hop flavor and aroma from the use of our own wet hops. We’d never let one bad harvest get in the way of a great beer, so join us in a toast to the memory of our devastating season.
That beer will be available in 750ml bottles and draft.
Also just approved is Sierra Nevada Bourbon Barrel-Aged Porter, a 7.8% porter brewed with vanilla and cacao nibs. Only a keg collar has come in so far meaning this is draft-only as far as we know.
All three beers will be brewed in Chico.
We have reached out to the brewery for more information.
So is Tumbler being phased out for this new beer? Is this year’s early and abbreviated release of Tumbler some sort of farewell tour?
