Press Release:
(Newport, RI) – Coastal Extreme Brewing Co. releases Angels’ Envy, after years of experimenting with the process of barrel-aging beers. Angels’ Envy will be the first Coastal Extreme Brewing beer packaged in 22 oz bottles, and the first non-Newport Storm brand of beer released by the microbrewery.
The idea behind Angels’ Envy comes from a play off a distiller’s warehouse term called “Angels’ Share.” When a spirit ages, a small amount of the barrel’s contents naturally evaporates through the porous oak, essentially rising up to the heavens where the angels are waiting. By putting beer into the barrel and allowing it to soak up the special flavors in and of the barrel, these celestial beings are denied such luxury.
A recipe of English Chocolate malts coupled with North American Pale and Crystal malts was chosen for the base beer and put into 6 Thomas Tew Single Barrel Rum barrel, from Newport, RI. After 7 months in the heavily charred, wooden barrels, big flavors of caramel, vanilla, oak and aged rum gently seeped into the brew, creating complex layered flavors ready to be bottled.
“Angels’ Envy represents the culmination of 2 years of brewing development. The unique access we have to these special Thomas Tew rum barrels compelled us to perfect an equally special beer,” explains Brent Ryan, President and Co-founder of Coastal Extreme Brewing Co.
This first foray into a 22 oz bottle brew resulted in just about 1,300 bottles, hand filled and capped in a single day, then set aside to naturally carbonate in the bottles. Angels’ Envy finished with a rich, dark color and 8% ABV.
Angels’ Envy was brewed in limited batch and will be available locally.
