But not everyone is so eager to raise a glass to the state’s growing industry. The Michigan Beer and Wine Wholesalers Association—the "800-pound gorilla of Lansing," as one brewer dubbed the trade association—has lobbied heavily, donating more than $3 million in political contributions to keep the state’s rigid "three-tier" division among producers, distributors and retailers firmly in place.
