Yuengling owner on Pennsylvania’s business climate, taxes and whether he’d sell

Yuengling was included earlier this year on a Forbes magazine list of billionaires, but he insisted Monday that he is not worth a billion dollars. "We’re not for sale," he said. "Nobody’s going to offer me a billion dollars for it, and if they (did), I wouldn’t take it."

  1. I’d sum up the article by saying he to get in the way of workers’ right to unionize through new legislation, after having done so through means that are arguably illegal already, while calling for tax cuts for rich people and insisting he is not quite actually a billionaire. Meanwhile, he doesn’t want Pennsylvanians to be able to buy a 6-pack or a 12-pack like everyone else.

And where’s the freshness dating on your bottles, Dick? We’re still waiting.

I won’t categorically say I’ll never drink Yuengling again, but I haven’t have a Yuengling lager in many years now, even though I used to drink it regularly.. Occasionally, I’ll have a Bock or an Oktoberfest, but only occasionally. I’m sick of the bad bottles where the stuff has just sat and sat because the guy doesn’t want to include any sort of bottled on or best by dating so we can avoid buying old oxidized bottles. And I’m sick of reading about his far-right politics. I don’t think he’s good for Pennsylvania.

I realize that some other corporate leaders privately hold these views, but Yuengling is just so outspoken that it’s hard to ignore. I don’t really care about the political views of the guy who brews the beers I drink, to a point. Yuengling crosses that point because he’s so outspoken that I can’t held but associate his obnoxious comments with his brand. And his views extend to the beer itself in the sense that I can not guarantee myself that I’m not buying beer that’s sat on the shelves for years, because he believes we customers are suckers who should just buy the beer and shut up. The big three macros he competes with all have some form of bottled on or freshness dating that’s clear, legiible, and easy to understand. The Boston Beer Company, which is roughly tied with Yuengling in volume as the top American brewer, has freshness dating. Other brewers at some point said making a few extra pennies wasn’t worth selling people a product that wasn’t fresh that would turn them off the brand.
