The Alchemist looking for new retail spot after neighbors’ complaints led to upcoming closure
While news of the closing was greeted with grief-stricken comments by customers who crashed the Heady Topper website Tuesday afternoon, it drew a big sigh of relief from Amy Kinsell, who owns the house next door to the brewery, "The busier they’ve gotten, the more chaotic my life has gotten,"

Breweries: The Alchemist
Amy Kinsell you are a horrible person.
Take it easy now. Maybe “chaotic” isn’t the word to describe constant cars coming in and out of a driveway but put yourself in her shoes.
So what’s the deal You closing… Moving… Finding another spot ?Why were you next to a residence in the first place. What’s the story?
So what’s the deal You closing… Moving… Finding another spot ?Why were you next to a residence in the first place. What’s the story? Why is ther a residence next to your retail shop?…Sounds like one of you should not be where you are…I’m guessing its the residence….ANYONE ?
I feel as though if she didn’t have a complaint when they built the cannery then she shouldn’t have a problem with a successful business next door. If she moved in after the cannery was built then she knew what she was getting into. How can you complain about someone who is obeying the law and building a successful business, whether you live next door or not.
Hi William, the snippets are meant to be engaging and geared toward making you want to learn more about the story. The link to the full story with full context can be found in the link after the words “More >>>” below the snippet.
But to answer one of your questions, they are only closing the location to the public.
BA, Facebook, Twitter and the Alchemist blog flooded with butthurt the likes of which has never been seen before. The level of acrimony is just ludicrous…
Heady is fantastic beer, no question about it, but if it wasn’t as near-impossible to get there wouldn’t be any of this fervor and adulation about it. It’s not like it’s *that* much different than other top-tier DIPAs out there (Pliny, Sculpin, etc.). Fanboyism to the extreme.
@ Chris: you are an idiot. You don’t even know her, or anything about her situation. But your mostly anonymous posting skills makes you feel like more of a man, eh?
From the article:
“there was one half-hour period last summer when 26 people turned around in her driveway. When she parked a vehicle across the entrance to her driveway to slow that traffic down, people turned around on her grass”
So, Chris, she is supposed to put up with that kinda crap? Would you? I’d be pissed off too… maybe the ignorant fanboys should look in the mirror to see a big part of the cause for the Alchemist’s decision.
I’m going to have a can of HT with dinner tonight… one that I bought last time I was up there, at Winooski Beverage. It really wasn’t that hard to buy it in a store, you know, rather than the brewery.
Lets not demonize the neighbor here. None of us would want that volume of traffic turning around in our driveways or driving on our lawns. You have to put the choosing of that location in perspective. It was designed to be a cannery first, with a small visiting area. No one at that time could have predicted that the beer would be declared ‘best beer in the world” driving the hysteria and volume of visitors to that location. They thought they were building a brewery that could supply their local accounts, not every beer geek in North America. So they need to reconsider their plans. They are no longer in the right location. They are planning changes. Not neighbors fault…

Ohhhh the irony. Does calling someone an idiot while hiding behind your computer screen make you feel like more of a man, eh Mr. Keyboard Warrior?
I love AMY! and I would be pissed too if people were turning around in my drive way or let alone on my lawn esp having kids! The place isnt even that big. People need to stop complaining or bashing someone just because its closing. They are finding a bigger place! Jeeze!
Oh one more thing.. Maybe people should have respected the “no tresspassing” signs that were hung on her mailbox at the end of the driveway!! Instead they were ignored by everyone!!
I think that its funny that not everyone knows the entire story. I have a friend that works for the Alchemist and this was closed in the beginning due to running ILLEGALY. they are just trying to make the neighbors take the blame. I hope the truth does come out eventually. The state CLOSED them…not the neighbors!
Lord love a duck! Poor Amy is stuck between two successful businesses – Ben & Jerry’s and the Alchemist. Whether she complained or not, her housing situation cannot be fun. Even if “we” go once a day, she has to contend with it ALL day (especially when beer is available). Cut her some slack. And if you say you’d love to have the brewery next door, you are not really thinking it through.
As for whether or not “the law” shut down the sales/tour sections, who cares? I’m happy an AMERICAN craft brewery is doing so well that it sells out as often as it does. I agree the retail/tour space isn’t that large, so something seems amiss in the announcement (what’s the real reason for the shutdown??). But is that what I really care about? NO! Keep the HT flowing and expand that canning line so you can start brewing some of the other stuff I know you’re great at. And God willing, send some HT to Texas!!! We’re dying of thirst down here A girl can only live on the beer she squirrels in her luggage every year for so long.
