This Thursday, marks the return of Cincinnati Beer Week for the third straight year. The latest rendition of Cincinnati Beer Week celebrates well-crafted beer from Thursday, February 6th thru Thursday, February 13th.
Following a tremendously successful 2013, Cincinnati Beer Week is showing significant growth as Greater Cincinnati’s brewing renaissance flourishes “Cincinnati Beer Week is packed full of events, education, entertainment & lots of well-crafted beer!” said Lindsey Bonadonna-Roeper. Ms. Bonadonna-Roeper, who serves as President on the Cincinnati Beer Week Board of Trustees says “There is truly an event for everyone, from the well-crafted beer curious to the well-crafted beer connoisseur! With so many local and charity focused events, participants are sure to find an even deeper appreciation for all that our city has to offer!”
Cincinnati Beer Week events will be found at multiple venues throughout our region. New in 2014 is an expanded emphasis on developing charity events as a way to give back to the community at large, as well as an expanded geographical area of Cincinnati Beer Week Celebration. Cincinnati Beer Week has also expanded the participating territory to include all of Butler, Warren, Clermont in Ohio as well as all of Boone, Kenton, & Campbell Counties in Northern Kentucky!
Introducing, Hostivit, the 2014 Cincinnati Beer Week Collaboration Beer
The 2014 Cincinnati Beer Week Beer is called Hostivit, & was brewed collaboratively by the brewers from almost all of Greater Cincinnati’s local breweries. The actual brewing of Hostivit took place at the Christian Moerlein OTR Production Facility last November. It was Christian Moerlein Brewing’s turn to host, after Mt. Carmel Brewing and Rivertown Brewing had hosted the collaboration brewing process in 2012 and 2013. The participating breweries for 2014 are Bad Tom Brewing, Blank Slate Brewing, Cellar Dwellar Brewing, Christian Moerlein Brewing Co., Ei8ht Ball Brewing, 50 West Brewing, Great Crescent Brewing, Listermann/Triple Digit Brewing, Mad Tree Brewing, Mt. Caramel Brewing, Rhinegeist Brewing and Rivertown Brewing.
Hostivit is a traditional Bohemian Pilsner, which is recognized by its rich, complex maltiness, but is yet refreshing. A typical soft, rounded bitterness and spicy flavor is imparted by the generous addition of Saaz hops. While the ABV for a traditional Bohemian Pilsner does not normally exceed 5.4%, this year’s collaboration brewers opted to create a “bigger” Pils. with a ABV of over 7%. A slight, sweet finish balances out the alcohol to produce a very easy drinking offering. The Rye malt’s 5% contribution to the grain bill also gives an unusual dimension/layer that complements very well with the distinctive flavor of Saaz. Zythos hops were also liberally used to showcase a beautiful, citrusy, slightly piney aroma.
The name Hostivit plays on the origin of Pilsner: People getting together to celebrate. “Hosti” means guests and “vitat” means welcome. Hostivit was the last of seven Bohemian mythical princes, founder of the first historical Bohemian/Moravian dynasty from 11th century Czechoslovakia. Richard Dube saw this as relating to Cincinnati (7 princes/7hills) and it also captures other tenets of Cincinnati Beer Week. Thus, “to educate, inspire well-crafted beer in a welcoming environment” is reflected in the name. There is also a nod to recognizing the collaborative aspect of this beer, where the host brewer welcomes in all the other brewers to participate in the creative process.

The 2014 Cincinnati Beer Week Taproom Trolley preview tour, which has been postponed due to snow in January will now happen on Saturday, March 22nd and Sunday, March 23rd. The extremely popular tour, which quickly sold out, is a delicious adventure of taproom beer exploration. The Tap Room Trolley features two different tour options, each happening on both days. Most tickets have already been sold, but due to the clamor for additional tickets from a eager public, two buses have now been added to Sundays stop. . Attendees who go on both Saturday and Sunday will have the opportunity to make a trolley stop at every participating Cincinnati area brewery tap room. Please note that each ticket purchase covers your bus transportation, brewery tours, a new limited release souvenir cap, and memories you will cherish for a lifetime, but DO NOT include ANY beer. All proceeds from the Tap Room Trolley Tour go toward supporting Cincinnati Beer Week, a not-for-profit organization. Ohio law requires you to purchase all of your own beer. Sales dates for any additional remaining tickets will be announced later this month.
Who runs Cincinnati Beer Week?
Cincinnati Beer Week is a not for profit entity run by a group of volunteers. Some of these volunteers serve on the Cincinnati Beer Week Board of Trustees, while others help run specific aspects of Cincinnati Beer Week such as the Tap Room Trolley Tour. The board of trustees itself is made up of members voted on by a general committee comprised of suppliers, wholesalers, retailers, beer writers, event organizers, homebrewers and others involved in beer throughout the area.
